CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN PIANO TRIOS, VOL. 2 with THE FRANCESCO TRIO CD-4933(1)
If there is a theme to repertoire selection on this second
disc of world premiere recordings of contemporary American piano trios by
the Francesco Trio, it is of independence and new directions, of composers
who have taken their influences and then gone their own way. Volume I in
the series, containing trios by Imbrie, Schifrin, Harbison and Powell, was
extremely well received.
Mark L. Lehman wrote in American Record Guide: "[a] wonderful program
of contemporary examples in a once great medium," while Benjamin Pernick
raved in Fanfare: "Outstanding performances, fine recording, excellent
notes. Recommended!" And critic Allan Ulrich, who is familiar with a number
of the composers' works represented on Volume I wrote in the San Francisco
Examiner: "The Francesco Trio confers on the repertoire an extraordinary
lucidity and integrity of impulse. The composers could hardly ask for more."
