The Complete Concert with the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra, given 17 March 1946. Previously Unreleased BRUCKNER: Symphony No.9 in d (unfinished) BEETHOVEN; Leonore Overture No. 2 AAD, UPC # 017685-11102-0

"The orchestra plays well in both works. It is not difficult to listen to; in fact, this is great sound for its time. While other conductors interpret this symphony as a radical departure from Bruckner's earlier works, in 1946, Walter seemed to be more interested in showing how much the Ninth had in common with its predecessors. If this symphony usually seems too emotionally disturbing, the present performance replaces discomfort with a warm objectivity."
-Raymond Tuttle, Classical Net

"...Walter's extreme freedom with rubato puts even Wilhelm Furtwängler's 1944 performance in the shade. This is an exciting performance, with powerfully inflected lyrical passages and some quite astonishingly lucid textures, so that despite the crumbling and often congested sound I heard many details that I have never noticed before, even in state-of-the-art stereo."
