RICHARD WAGNER: DIE MEISTERSINGER VON N?RNBERG, Act
II
CD-1068(1)
Writes critic David Breckbill in his liner notes: "The
studio broadcast performances on this disc reveal the central performance
style used for projecting Wagner's Die Meistersinger von N?rnberg
in Germany during the Third Reich. It's an idiomatic approach that
seems to have been largely supplanted in subsequent years and to have
been missing in other settings. By "idiomatic" I mean performances
in which the comedic element of the score is supported by a briskness
of tempo and spirit?.It is tempting to conclude that German conductors
of the time sought in this way to make audible the strand of this
many-faceted opera which celebrates the character of the German Volk
as it was then understood."
